Power of attorney from Cyprus to sell a car in Ukraine

Situation

The client had been living and working in Cyprus for several years. His car stayed behind in Kyiv, and a buyer finally appeared. The classic problem: selling the car required a power of attorney for a relative in Kyiv, and flying home for a single signature was expensive and inconvenient.

Task

Issue a power of attorney for the car sale with full legal force in Ukraine — entirely remotely.

How we did it

1. A template from a Ukrainian notary. A Ukrainian notary first drafted the power of attorney with all the required details: the owner, the vehicle, and the person receiving the authority. We sent the client the ready template.
2. Certification in Cyprus. The client visited a local notary, signed the document, and had it certified. An apostille was attached — Cyprus is a Hague Convention country, so no consular legalization was needed.
3. Shipping to Ukraine. The client sent the original to Kyiv by international post.
4. Back-translation and notarization. Because the main text was originally in Ukrainian, we only had to translate the Cypriot notary certificate and the apostille. The translation was bound to the original and notarized.

Result

The client’s relative collected the finished document at our Kyiv office and completed the car sale without the owner’s presence. The client never boarded a plane — the entire procedure ran on courier mail and messengers.

Worth knowing
