France is a country of procedures: the préfecture, the mairie, and the court each keep their own checklist, and at its center sits the traducteur assermenté — a sworn translator from a court of appeal’s experts list. At the same time, many “everyday” recipients happily accept a notarized translation from Ukraine — real savings, if you ask first.

How it works in practice

For Ukrainian documents going to French institutions the chain is standard: apostille in Ukraine → translation → certification in the required format.

• Préfecture, mairie, court, OFII (titre de séjour, naturalization, marriage, court matters) — require a sworn French translation by a traducteur assermenté.
• Universities — requirements vary: some campus platforms accept certified translations from Ukraine, others want assermenté. Check your specific university.
• Employers, landlords, insurers — a notarized translation from Ukraine is usually enough and noticeably cheaper.

The most frequent documents: birth and marriage certificates (note that some mairies want “fresh” extracts no older than 3–6 months), police clearance, diplomas, powers of attorney.

Documents the other way: from France to Ukraine

French documents — acte de naissance, court decisions, corporate extracts (Kbis) — used in Ukraine require an apostille affixed by the French authorities plus a notarized Ukrainian translation. We produce the translation in Kyiv from scans and ship the finished package by Nova Poshta.
