Documents for Hungary

from UAH 900Quote in 15 minutesUpdated:

Hungary has the most distinctive official-translation system in the EU: for most state procedures a “hiteles fordítás” can be issued only by the state office OFFI. At the same time, the apostille is mostly not needed here — Ukraine and Hungary have a legal-assistance treaty. Understanding these two facts saves both time and money.

How it works in practice

  • State procedures (citizenship, civil registry, some migration matters) — require a hiteles fordítás from OFFI. We prepare the base translation and documents so OFFI certification passes without rework.
  • Employers, schools, hospitals, banks — often accept a notarized translation from Ukraine: noticeably cheaper and faster. The rule stands: ask your institution in writing which format it accepts.
  • The apostille — usually waived under the legal-assistance treaty; if a specific institution insists, we affix it in Ukraine.

The most frequent documents: birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, police clearance, employment paperwork.

Documents the other way: from Hungary to Ukraine

Hungarian documents used in Ukraine likewise mostly need no apostille under the same treaty — a notarized Ukrainian translation suffices. We produce it in Kyiv from scans; the package ships by Nova Poshta.

A power of attorney from Hungary for use in Ukraine follows “template from a Ukrainian notary → certification at a Hungarian notary → back-translation” — shown in detail in our cross-border PoA case.

Frequently asked questions

Do Ukrainian documents need an apostille for Hungary?

Mostly no: Ukraine and Hungary have a legal-assistance treaty under which official documents are recognized without extra legalization. Some institutions may still ask for an apostille — confirm the requirement in writing before ordering.

What is OFFI and why does everyone mention it?

OFFI (Országos Fordító és Fordításhitelesítő Iroda) is Hungary's state translation office, holding the exclusive right to issue "hiteles fordítás" (officially certified translation) for most state procedures. If your institution requires hiteles fordítás, the final certification is OFFI's — we prepare the documents so that stage goes faster.

When is a translation made in Ukraine enough?

For employers, schools, banks, and many private recipients a notarized translation from Ukraine is accepted — and noticeably cheaper. Ask the institution first which format it needs.

Can everything be handled remotely from Hungary?

Yes: send scans, we translate and certify in Kyiv, and ship the finished documents as scans and by post.
