A driver’s license is rarely translated “just in case”. The reason is usually specific: the country where you have settled requires you to exchange your Ukrainian license for a local one, and without a certified translation the application package is not accepted. A translation is not an IDP — and an IDP is not a translation
These two documents are constantly confused. The International Driving Permit (IDP) is a separate booklet issued by MIA service centers as a supplement to your national license: it is designed for temporary trips and is only valid together with your plastic card. A certified translation is an entirely different instrument: an official rendering of the card itself in the language of the country where you are submitting documents.
When you are a tourist behind the wheel of a rental car, an IDP usually settles the matter. When it comes to relocation, work, or residence, the scenario changes: after a certain period of residence, most countries require you to exchange your Ukrainian license for a local one — and the exchange file must include a translation of the license. An IDP does not satisfy that requirement.
When a translation is specifically required
- Exchanging your license abroad. In Germany the procedure is called Umtausch, in Poland — wymiana prawa jazdy: a certified translation of the Ukrainian card is attached to the application. The document set and the type of certification vary from country to country and even between offices — check the requirements on the website of the local authority that handles the exchange.
- Car rental and insurance cases. Rental companies are mostly satisfied with the card or an IDP, but after an accident or during an insurance claim abroad, the insurer may request a translation of the license.
- Working as a professional driver. An employer or licensing body needs documented proof of your open categories — for example, C, CE, or D for freight and passenger transport.
- Exchanging a foreign license in Ukraine. The mirror direction: a license issued by another country is exchanged through MIA service centers, and that requires a notarized translation into Ukrainian.
If you are in the EU under temporary protection
Special rules on recognizing Ukrainian driver’s licenses apply to Ukrainians with temporary protection status in the EU — for the duration of the protection, licenses are largely recognized without exchange. But these rules are periodically extended and revised, and the end of protection or a switch to another residence status usually means the standard exchange procedure — with a translation in the package. Verify the current conditions on the website of the transport authority of your host country, not from social media posts.
What exactly is translated on the card
The plastic license is one standard document, and both of its sides are translated. Particular attention goes to:
- the table of categories with the validity dates of each — this is how the institution sees what you are allowed to drive;
- special restriction codes — for example, mandatory glasses or contact lenses: omitting them can turn into problems with your insurance;
- the spelling of your name — the transliteration must match your international passport, so send us a copy of it along with the license (you can verify the official transliteration with our free tool);
- older formats — paper licenses and cards issued before 2016 have a different set of fields, and the translator checks each of them individually.
If the institution asks for other personal documents along with the license, the most common companion is a passport translation — we prepare both documents in a single order.
Certification: notary or agency stamp
An apostille is not normally placed on a driver’s license — exchange offices need a certified translation, not a legalized original. The only question is which certification the specific institution will accept:
- notarized — a notary certifies the authenticity of the signature of a degreed translator; the standard for Ukrainian government bodies and many procedures abroad — UAH 400;
- agency-stamped — the translation is sealed with the translator’s signature and the company stamp; enough for some foreign offices and for rental or insurance companies — UAH 100.

Frequently asked questions
How is a driver's license translation different from an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
They are two different instruments. The International Driving Permit is a separate document issued by MIA service centers as a supplement to your national license, meant for temporary trips. A certified translation is an official rendering of your plastic card in another language — and that is what licensing authorities ask for when you exchange your license for a local one, along with insurers and employers. An IDP does not replace a translation, and a translation does not replace an IDP: the institution receiving your documents decides which one your situation requires.
Are both sides of the license translated?
Yes. The back of the card carries the table of categories with their issue and expiry dates, plus special restriction codes — for example, mandatory glasses or contact lenses. For the receiving institution this information matters as much as the holder's name, so the translation always covers both the front and the back. The plastic card still counts as one standard document.
Does a driver's license need an apostille?
As a rule, no. Driver's licenses are not normally apostilled: the authorities that handle license exchange ask for a certified translation of the card. If a particular institution unexpectedly requires legalization, clarify it with them directly before ordering — such cases are rare and depend on the country and the procedure.
Which certification should I choose — notarized or agency-stamped?
It depends on who will accept the translation. Notarization (UAH 400) is the universal option for government bodies in Ukraine and many procedures abroad. For some foreign offices, certification with the agency's stamp and the translator's signature (UAH 100) is enough. We offer both; if the institution's wording is vague, check with them or ask our manager.
