Documents for the USA

from UAH 230Quote in 15 minutesUpdated:

The USA has no sworn translators and very clear rules: immigration procedures run on certified translation — a translation with the translator’s statement of accuracy. The form matters as much as the content: USCIS rejects documents for missing certification more often than for translation quality.

How it works in practice

  • USCIS (immigration, U4U, green card) — a full English translation + certification of accuracy. We prepare translations in exactly this format, adding notarization when the document is needed elsewhere too.
  • Credential evaluation (WES, ECE) — the diploma and supplement translated in the service’s format; each has its own submission flow.
  • Courts, marriage, state institutions — this is where the apostille appears: affixed in Ukraine on the original before translation. Requirements vary by state — check locally; we’ll help you ask.

As with Canada, the critical detail is name transliteration matching the international passport across the whole package.

Documents the other way: from the USA to Ukraine

American documents used in Ukraine need an apostille from the US authorities (the state’s Secretary of State; the State Department for federal documents) plus a notarized Ukrainian translation. The special case is powers of attorney: “template from a Ukrainian notary → notary public certification → state apostille → back-translation” — described in our cross-border PoA case.

Frequently asked questions

What translation does USCIS accept?

USCIS requires a full English translation with the translator's certification of accuracy — a signed statement with the translator's details. USCIS itself doesn't require notarization, though it doesn't hurt if the document will also serve other institutions.

Do Ukrainian documents need an apostille for the USA?

For USCIS — usually no. For courts, marriage, some state procedures, and universities — yes: the apostille goes on the original in Ukraine before translation. Check the specific institution or state.

How do I translate a diploma for WES or ECE evaluation?

Credential-evaluation services (WES, ECE) accept diplomas with supplements in translation; some documents must come from the university directly. We translate the package in the chosen service's format and advise on the steps.

Which documents does the U4U (Uniting for Ukraine) program need?

The typical set: birth and marriage certificates, medical certificates, education documents. The full list depends on your case — send the checklist from your sponsor or attorney and we'll assemble and translate the package.
