memoQ: team translation memory and living terminology

memoQ is a professional computer-assisted translation system from the Hungarian company memoQ (formerly Kilgray) — one of the industry’s two global CAT standards alongside Trados Studio. At MovaPro, memoQ is our main tool for team projects where several translators work on one document package at the same time.

What memoQ does

• Shared translation memory. The whole project team works against one database: a sentence translated a minute ago instantly becomes a suggestion for colleagues. The same contract clause or standard note sounds identical across every file in the package.
• Term base. Your terms — product names, legal wording, interface labels — are approved once and highlighted for every translator right in the text.
• Match and repetition analysis. Before the start, the system counts in-package repetitions and matches against accumulated memory — the basis of an honest quote: repetitions are not billed at the full rate.
• Built-in quality control. memoQ checks numbers, tags, skipped segments, and terminology; we run the final pass in ApSIC Xbench, and a human editor proofreads everything.

Formats are not a problem. A website in HTML, a catalog in InDesign, an interface in XML — memoQ extracts the text and puts the translation back in place. That is especially valuable in website localization and marketing materials, where file structure is complex.

How we work in memoQ

1. Server-side project — the files are deployed on a memoQ server with your translation memory and glossary attached; for new clients we build both from the very first files.
2. Split across translators — a large volume is divided into parts, and every participant sees approved terms and colleagues’ suggestions in real time.
3. Live term resolution — a disputed term is flagged right inside the project and settled by the editor, with your input when needed, while translation is still in progress.
4. No visible seams — the editor reads the merged text end to end so the joints between different translators’ parts disappear.
5. Returned in the original format — you get the files back exactly as you sent them, and the project memory keeps working for your future orders.
